What a Full Property Security Setup Looks Like (CCTV + Fence + Gate + Access Control)

A lot of people ask me: "What does a proper security setup actually include?"

Here's a breakdown of a recent residential installation we completed:

CCTV System

  • 8x 4MP IP cameras with night vision

  • Strategic placement covering entry points, driveway, perimeter walls, and garden

  • NVR with 30-day recording and remote viewing from your phone

Electric Fence

  • Full perimeter coverage with 6-strand configuration

  • Energizer rated at 8,000V output

  • Lightning protection and anti-tamper brackets

  • Zone monitoring so you know exactly where a breach happens

Gate Motor

  • Sliding gate motor rated for gates up to 500kg

  • Battery backup for operation during load shedding / power cuts

  • 2x remotes + keypad access

Access Control

  • Intercom with video at the main entrance

  • Biometric reader for pedestrian gate

  • Cloud-managed access logs

Every component talks to each other. If the fence detects a breach, the cameras in that zone start recording at maximum resolution. If power drops, the gate motor and access control switch to backup.

This is what proper integration looks like.

5 Signs Your Security System Needs Maintenance (Before It's Too Late)

Most people install CCTV, electric fences, and gate motors — then forget about them. Until something breaks at the worst possible time.

Here are the warning signs I see constantly in the field:

1. Your cameras are recording blurry footage

Dust, spider webs, and weathering degrade image quality over time. If you can't clearly identify a face at 5 meters, your cameras need servicing.

2. Your electric fence energizer clicks but the voltage is dropping

A working fence should maintain 6,000V+. If it's dipping below 4,000V, you've got vegetation contact, damaged wires, or a failing energizer.

3. Your gate motor struggles in cold weather

Stiff movement, grinding sounds, or slow response usually means the gearbox needs lubrication and the limit switches need recalibration.

4. Your access control batteries haven't been replaced in 2+ years

Backup batteries in access panels and intercoms degrade. During a power outage, you need those working.

5. You can't remember your last system check

If it's been more than 6 months, you're overdue. Security systems need regular attention just like your car.

I've been installing and maintaining CCTV, electric fences, gate motors, and access control systems for years. Prevention is always cheaper than emergency repairs.
