The 3 things that actually kill a DJ's sound at outdoor gigs (and it's not the speakers)
Been building portable PA gear for mobile DJs and event performers, and the same three failures come up over and over — none of them are about wattage.
1. Battery sag under load. A system rated for 6 hours at 50% volume gives you maybe 2 at full send during a real set with bass drops. If your rig doesn't publish a runtime curve at max output, assume it's optimistic marketing.
2. Wind noise on outdoor gigs. Ported speaker designs move way more air through the cabinet — great for indoor headroom, brutal for wind hiss outdoors. Sealed or hybrid cabinets hold up better once you're outside four walls.
3. Single-point failure setups. If your mixer, speakers, and power all run through one path with no backup channel, one loose XLR cable ends your set. Always carry a Bluetooth failover — it's saved more gigs than any piece of gear I own.
Building Shepherd Sounds around solving exactly these three problems for mobile performers. If you're tired of gear that works in the store and dies at the venue, come see what we're building.
