The $5k website vs. the $500 website — what actually changes

I build WordPress sites for small businesses, and the question I get most is 'why is there such a huge price range for what looks like the same thing?'

Here's the honest breakdown of what you're actually paying for as price goes up:

Under $1k: A templated theme with your logo swapped in. Fine for a placeholder. Loads slow, generic layout, you'll outgrow it in a year.

$1k-3k: Custom layout built around YOUR content (not the other way around), proper on-page SEO structure, mobile-first design, and someone who actually tests it on real devices before handing it over.

$3k+: Everything above, plus custom functionality — booking systems, membership gates, multi-location pages, integrations with your CRM/email tool.

The part nobody tells you: the build is maybe 30% of the real cost of owning a website. The other 70% is what happens after launch — plugin updates, security patches, broken layouts after a WordPress core update, backups nobody checks until it's too late. Most small business owners find out the hard way when their site goes down and they don't know who to call.

If you're shopping for a website, ask whoever you hire one question: 'what happens the day after you hand it over?' If the answer is 'nothing, good luck,' factor that risk into the price.
