The 5 Measurements That Make or Break an Interior SketchUp Model

{"type":"doc","content":[{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Most SketchUp interior models fail before a single line is drawn — because the measurements were wrong. After modeling hundreds of real rooms, these are the five measurements that matter most:"}]},{"type":"heading","attrs":{"level":3},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"1. Floor Diagonal"}]},{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Measure corner to corner across the floor. This catches rooms that aren't perfectly rectangular — and most aren't. If your diagonal doesn't match your wall lengths, you know which walls are off-square."}]},{"type":"heading","attrs":{"level":3},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"2. Ceiling Height at Multiple Points"}]},{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Don't assume 8 feet. Measure at each corner and the center. Older buildings can vary by 2+ inches across a room, which shows up immediately when you try to place crown molding or tall furniture."}]},{"type":"heading","attrs":{"level":3},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"3. Window Sill and Header Heights"}]},{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Measure from the floor to the bottom of the sill AND from the floor to the top of the window frame. Width alone isn't enough — vertical placement determines how natural light enters and where furniture can sit below."}]},{"type":"heading","attrs":{"level":3},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"4. Door Swing Clearance"}]},{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Measure the full arc of every door. This is the measurement clients notice when your model shows a dresser in the path of a door that opens inward. Mark which direction each door swings."}]},{"type":"heading","attrs":{"level":3},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"5. Outlet and Switch Positions"}]},{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Measure horizontal distance from the nearest corner and height from floor. Clients will ask why you put a sofa in front of the only outlet on that wall. These small details separate amateur models from professional ones."}]},{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"Get these five right and your SketchUp model will match the real room closely enough to make confident design decisions. Get them wrong and you'll be re-measuring on-site — or worse, the client will notice."}]}]}
