The most research-backed toddler sleep fix is also the most boring one

If bedtime at your house has turned into a nightly negotiation, or you're up at 2am more often than not, you're in very good company. Toddler sleep struggles are common, and they're very fixable.

When I went through the research, I expected the best-supported changes to be clever tricks. One of the strongest is also the least exciting: a consistent bedtime routine.

What the studies show

  • In a randomized trial with about 400 families of babies and toddlers, parents followed the same short bedtime routine every night. Within three weeks, the children fell asleep faster and woke less during the night. The mothers' mood improved too. (Mindell et al., 2009)

  • A later survey of more than 10,000 families across 14 countries found a dose effect: the more nights a week a family kept a routine, the better the children slept. (Mindell et al., 2015)

What "routine" actually means

It's simpler than most people think. It means a few calm steps done in the same order every night, for example pajamas, teeth, one book, lights out. Being elaborate isn't the point. Being predictable is. The leading explanation is that the sequence itself becomes the cue that sleep is coming.

Most families get the steps right. What they skip is consistency. A routine that happens four nights a week, or changes order on weekends, loses much of the effect.

If you want to try it

  1. Pick 3–4 steps you can realistically do every night, including on tired nights.

  2. Write them down so every caregiver follows the same order.

  3. Give it two to three weeks before judging. That's roughly the timeframe the trial measured.

What does your current routine look like? Post it below and I'll help you troubleshoot.

If you'd like more like this, I put together a free 6-page guide, Sleep Reset: 3 Gentle Shifts. It covers three evidence-based changes you can start tonight, with the research behind each one:
