The 3-List Method: How I Stopped Drowning in Tasks
Most people's to-do lists are where productivity goes to die.
You write down 20 things. You finish 3. You feel terrible. Repeat tomorrow.
Here's the system I use instead — I call it the 3-List Method:
List 1: The "Must Ship" List (3 items max)
These are non-negotiable. If you only did these 3 things today, the day was a win. Be ruthless — if it's not urgent AND important, it doesn't belong here.
List 2: The "Would Be Nice" List (5 items max)
These are things you'd like to get to after your Must Ships are done. No guilt if they roll over to tomorrow.
List 3: The "Brain Dump" List (unlimited)
Everything else goes here. Ideas, reminders, things you'll get to eventually. The point is to get it OUT of your head so it stops creating mental noise.
The magic is in the constraint. When you force yourself to pick only 3 Must Ships, you actually think about what matters. And when you finish all 3 by 2pm? That momentum is unbeatable.
I built SmoothSailer around systems like this — frameworks that actually reduce overwhelm instead of just reorganizing it.
