5 design mistakes killing your social media engagement (and free fixes)

I've designed templates for hundreds of small businesses and creators, and the same mistakes come up over and over.

Here are the 5 biggest ones I see — and how to fix them today, for free:

1. Too much text on graphics

Your audience scrolls fast. If they can't understand your post in 2 seconds, they're gone. Rule: no more than 7 words on an image.

2. Inconsistent colors and fonts

Pick 2-3 colors and 2 fonts. Use them everywhere. That's it. Consistency = recognition = trust.

3. No visual hierarchy

If everything is the same size, nothing stands out. Make your headline BIG, supporting text small. Guide the eye.

4. Ignoring your story format

Stories and Reels have different dimensions than feed posts. Posting a square image as a story with black bars? That screams amateur. Always design for the right dimensions.

5. No call to action

Every post should tell people what to do next: comment, save, share, click the link. Don't leave them hanging.

Fix these 5 things and you'll see a noticeable difference in engagement within a week. No expensive tools needed — just intention.

I build ready-to-use Canva templates at DigiBox that already follow all these principles, so you can skip the learning curve entirely.
