If you're heading to South Africa (or already there), here are 3 small isiZulu habits that make a massive difference in how people respond to you — from taxi drivers to shopkeepers to your new neighbours.

1. "Sawubona" instead of "Hi"

Literally means "I see you." Saying this instead of English "hi" immediately signals respect. People light up.

2. "Ngiyabonga" (thank you) — always paired with eye contact

It's a small thing, but combined with genuinely looking at someone, it lands very differently than a mumbled "thanks."

3. "Ngicela usizo" (I'm asking for help) instead of just pointing or gesturing

Zulu culture values the asking — showing you're making an effort to speak, even badly, earns way more goodwill than assuming English.

None of this requires fluency. It requires 5 phrases used consistently and confidently.
