The $500 mistake almost every new speaker makes when quoting a fee

I've watched dozens of first-time speakers underprice themselves by 40-60% — not because they weren't good, but because they quoted a number off the top of their head instead of running it through a system.

Here's the fast version of what I teach inside Fee Vault Academy:

The 3 inputs that actually determine your fee:

  1. Room value — What's the audience worth to the organizer? A 200-person sales team offsite pays differently than a 50-person community meetup, even if the prep work is identical.

  2. Prep-to-stage ratio — Custom content for a 45-minute keynote can take 15-20 hours. If you're not pricing that time, you're doing unpaid consulting with a stage attached.

  3. Ceiling anchor — Always quote knowing your top-tier number first. If you don't have one, organizers set it for you — and it's never in your favor.

The mistake: Quoting a "nice round number" (like $2,500) because it feels safe. Safe numbers signal "negotiable." Specific numbers (like $3,150) signal "this was calculated" — and get paid more often, with less back-and-forth.

I built a calculator template that runs these 3 inputs automatically so you're never guessing on a call again. It's part of the full system inside Fee Vault Academy, along with the Discord tier structure and upsell ladder that turns single gigs into recurring income.
