The 50/30/20 rule is dead. Here's what actually works in 2026.

Everyone tells you to split your income 50/30/20 — needs, wants, savings.

But if you're 20 and making $35k, 50% on "needs" barely covers rent in most cities. And 20% savings? That's $583/month. Good luck building wealth at that pace.

Here's what I tell people instead:

Track first, budget second. Most people budget blind. Spend 2 weeks logging everything. You'll find $200-400/month you didn't know you were burning.

Automate the hard part. Set up auto-transfers the day you get paid. Even $50/week into an index fund is $31k in 10 years (at 8% avg return).

Kill subscriptions ruthlessly. The average 22-year-old spends $219/month on subscriptions they forgot about. Audit yours today.

Start investing ugly. You don't need to understand options or crypto. One S&P 500 index fund. Set it and forget it. Time in the market > timing the market.

The real secret? The system that works is the one you'll actually stick with. Stop optimizing and start doing.

Building SpendSmart to help people do exactly this — track spending, save smarter, and learn investing without the BS.

Welcome to SpendSmart 💰

Hey, welcome in.

Here's how to get the most out of SpendSmart:

1. Track your spending — Start logging where your money goes. Even a week of data will show you patterns you didn't know existed.

2. Hit the Money Talk chat — Ask questions, share wins, get advice from people in the same boat. No judgment.

3. Watch for weekly tips — Every week I'll drop saving strategies and investing basics right here in the feed.

The goal is simple: spend less on things that don't matter, save more, and start putting your money to work.

Let's get it.
