The 3 emotional patterns that destroy relationships (and how to break them)
Most relationship problems aren't about the other person. They're about patterns you keep running on autopilot.
After studying emotional intelligence research for years, I've noticed three patterns that come up over and over:
1. Emotional flooding
You feel everything at once and shut down or explode. Your nervous system hijacks the conversation before your brain catches up. The fix isn't "calm down" — it's learning to recognize the flood 10 seconds before it hits.
2. Mind-reading instead of asking
You assume you know what someone means by their tone, their silence, their expression. You build an entire narrative without checking. Most arguments start here — not from what was said, but from what was assumed.
3. Scorekeeping
"I did X, so they should do Y." The moment a relationship becomes transactional, resentment builds. High-EQ people focus on communicating needs directly, not keeping invisible tallies.
Breaking these patterns isn't about willpower. It's about awareness — catching yourself mid-pattern and choosing differently.
