Why 'just hire a freelancer' is the wrong advice for agencies with overflow work

Every agency owner hits this wall eventually: you land a client project, but your dev team is slammed. The usual advice is "just post it on a freelance marketplace." Here's why that's slower and riskier than it sounds:

The real cost of vetting. Sifting through proposals, checking portfolios, running a paid trial task — that's easily 5-10 hours you're not billing anywhere. And half the time the "5-star" freelancer still isn't a fit for your stack.

Context switching kills momentum. Every new freelancer you onboard needs a fresh brief, fresh access, fresh trust-building. If you're doing this per-project, you're paying that tax constantly.

What actually works: a standing bench. Instead of re-sourcing every time, keep a relationship with a small pool of vetted developers who already know your workflow and communication style. When overflow hits, you're not starting from zero — you're just pulling the next available match.

That's the whole idea behind what we're building at StackMatch — a matching layer for agencies that need web/app/automation dev capacity on demand, without re-running the hiring gauntlet every time. Happy to share more on how we vet devs if anyone's curious.
