The 5 metrics VCs actually look at (and how most founders get them wrong)
I've built investor dashboards for dozens of early-stage startups. Here's what I've learned about what VCs actually care about — and where founders consistently miss the mark.
1. MRR Growth Rate (not just MRR)
Investors don't care that you're at $15K MRR. They care that you grew 22% last month. Show the trajectory, not the snapshot.
2. Net Revenue Retention
If your NRR is below 100%, you have a leaky bucket. VCs will spot this immediately. Track expansion revenue separately from new revenue.
3. CAC Payback Period
Forget LTV/CAC ratio — it's too easy to manipulate with optimistic lifetime assumptions. Payback period in months is the honest metric.
4. Cohort Retention Curves
This is where most founders drop the ball. A flat retention curve after month 3 is gold. A declining one is a red flag no amount of growth can hide.
5. Burn Multiple
How much are you burning for every dollar of new ARR? Below 2x is efficient. Above 3x and you need a story for why.
Most founders dump these into a Google Sheet and call it a day. The ones who close rounds present them as a clear narrative — with context, benchmarks, and trend lines.
That's what we do at CloudVerse Solutions. If your data isn't telling a compelling story, we fix that.
