I've been designing STL files for home 3D printers for a while, and these are the lessons that actually made my prints go from "meh" to "that's on display."

1. Wall thickness is everything. Most failed prints come from walls that are too thin. I design at 1.2mm minimum — prints clean on basically any FDM printer without drama.

2. Design for the bed, not the render. A model can look incredible in Blender but be impossible to print without supports everywhere. Flat bases, smart overhangs, and intentional orientation save hours of frustration.

3. Material matters more than resolution. A 0.2mm layer height PLA print with good geometry will look better than a 0.1mm print of a bad model. Design shapes that naturally hide layer lines.

4. Functional art > pure decoration. The pieces people keep on their shelves do something — hold a phone, organize cables, mount to a wall. Utility + aesthetics = prints that don't end up in a drawer.

5. Test on budget printers. If it prints well on an Ender 3, it'll print well on anything. That's the standard I hold every file to.
