The 3 things most Americans get wrong about tornadoes

I've spent a lot of time studying tornadoes and hurricanes, and there are 3 misconceptions that could get people killed:

1. "Opening windows equalizes pressure and saves your house"

This is completely false. Opening windows wastes time you should be using to get to shelter. The pressure difference isn't what destroys your home — the wind is.

2. "Overpasses are safe shelter"

One of the most dangerous myths out there. An overpass actually creates a wind tunnel effect. You're MORE exposed up there, not less. Multiple fatalities have been caused by this exact mistake.

3. "Tornadoes don't hit downtown areas"

Tell that to Nashville (2020), Joplin (2011), or Tuscaloosa (2011). Tornadoes don't care about city limits. They follow the mesocyclone, not the map.

If you want the full breakdown — preparation checklists, real-time decision frameworks, and everything you need to know about surviving America's deadliest storms — I put it all into one guide.
