The subject line mistake killing your referral emails (and the fix)
If you're a student trying to build referral income through cold outreach, here's the single biggest mistake I see: sending the same subject line to everyone.
Most people write one "good" subject line and blast it to 200 contacts. Then they wonder why open rates sit at 12-15%.
Here's what actually works — a simple 4-category testing matrix:
Curiosity ("quick question about your [class/major]")
Direct value ("get $50 back on textbooks this semester")
Social proof ("how 40 students at [school] are earning referral income")
Personal/casual ("hey — saw you're in [club], thought of you")
Send ~25 emails per category (100 total), check open rates after 48 hours, then double down on whichever category wins. Kill anything under 20% open rate immediately — don't keep sending a subject line that isn't working out of stubbornness.
Student inboxes are way less crowded than professional inboxes. You should realistically be targeting 35%+ open rates, not the 15-20% "good" benchmark you see in general cold email advice — that benchmark is written for cluttered corporate inboxes, not yours.
The compounding part: once you find a winning line, make 3 micro-variants (swap one word, tweak capitalization, add/remove an emoji) and test those against your next batch. Your best-performing formula keeps getting sharper every week instead of going stale.
Curious what open rates others here are seeing — drop yours below.
