Why Most New Music Channels Film the Wrong Video First (And How to Fix It)

Here's what I see over and over with new music YouTube channels:

Someone spends two weeks setting up a camera, mixing audio, editing a video — and it gets 47 views. Not because the music was bad. Because the concept didn't match what strangers search for.

The problem isn't production quality. It's concept selection.

New channels don't have fans yet. That means every video needs to earn clicks from strangers — people who have zero loyalty to you and are one bad thumbnail away from scrolling past.

Most creators pick video ideas based on what excites them, not what attracts strangers.

Here's a quick test you can run on any video idea right now:

The 3 Questions

  1. Would a stranger click this? Not your friend. Not your mom. Someone who has never heard of you and has 200 other videos competing for their attention.

  1. Can you make this on a low budget? If the idea needs expensive gear, a studio, or pro editing to work — it's the wrong first video. Your first videos need to prove the concept, not the production.

  1. Does this lead to a second video? A one-off video might get views, but it doesn't build a channel. The best concepts are ones where viewers think "I want to see more of this."

If your idea fails any of these three, it's not your next video. Simple as that.

The real skill for a new music channel isn't making great music (you probably already do that). It's choosing which video to make first.

I built a complete concept-selection system for exactly this problem — choosing, scoring, and ranking video ideas before you spend time or money on production. It's called New Music Channels Attracting Subscribers Without Big Budgets.
