3 things most adult beginner swimmers get wrong (and how to fix them)
I've coached dozens of adults who decided to learn swimming later in life. Same mistakes every time.
1. Death grip on the wall
Your instinct is to stay near the edge. But you'll never build water confidence if you're always 2 feet from safety. Start in chest-deep water and practice floating. Let go of the wall. The water will hold you.
2. Lifting your head to breathe
This is the #1 technique killer. When you lift your head, your hips drop, and suddenly swimming feels 10x harder. Practice exhaling underwater and rotating your head to the side — your mouth only needs to clear the surface by an inch.
3. Kicking from the knees
Big, splashy kicks feel powerful but they're incredibly inefficient. The kick starts from your hips, not your knees. Think of your legs as whips, not pistons. Small, fast, relaxed kicks > big thrashing ones.
Master these three things and you'll be swimming laps within weeks, not months.
If you want structured coaching, drills, and a community of adults learning together — that's exactly what SwimFit is for.
