Welcome to Takedown Academy — Start Here

Welcome to Takedown Academy. You made a serious decision joining — now it's time to back it up with work.

What You Get

The Takedown Mastery Course — 5 chapters, 17 lessons covering:

  • Stance, motion, and setup fundamentals

  • The snatch single leg (setups, finishes, and common mistakes)

  • The clean double leg (setups and three finishing methods)

  • High-crotch attacks (entry, four different finishes)

  • Chain wrestling — connecting everything into a personal attack system

Every lesson includes detailed breakdowns, drills you can do solo or with a partner, and self-assessment checklists.

How to Work Through the Course

Go in order. Chapter 1 builds the foundation. Don't skip to the snatch single because it sounds exciting — your shots will fail if your stance and level change are broken.

Spend at least one week per chapter. Read the lesson, drill it that day, then drill it again the next two sessions before moving on.

Mat Room Chat

Use it. Post questions, film clips of your technique, and help each other out.

One Rule

Do the drills. Reading about wrestling doesn't make you better. Drilling makes you better. Every lesson has specific drills with rep counts. Do them.

Let's get to work.

The #1 Reason Your Takedowns Fail (Free Drill to Fix It)

Every wrestling coach has seen it a thousand times — an athlete shoots a technically sound single leg or double leg and gets sprawled on, stuffed, and shut down.

99% of the time, it's the same problem: you're bending at the waist instead of changing levels with your hips.

The Waist-Bend vs. The Hip Drop

When most wrestlers "change levels," they bend forward at the waist. Their head drops, their back rounds, and their hips stay HIGH behind them. This is a death sentence for a takedown because:

  1. No power — Your power comes from your legs and hips. If your hips are behind you, there's nothing driving the shot.

  2. Face-first into the sprawl — Bending at the waist puts your face right where their hands want to push it — straight into the mat.

  3. Easy to read — When your upper body dives forward, your opponent sees it coming from a mile away.

A real level change drops your hips STRAIGHT DOWN by bending your knees. Your back stays flat, your chest stays up, and your head stays in position. Only your elevation changes — like an elevator going down.

The Fix: Wall Penetration Steps

Here's a drill you can do solo, right now:

  1. Stand facing a wall, about 3 feet away, in your wrestling stance

  2. Drop your hips (bend your knees — NOT your waist) and penetration step forward

  3. Your lead shoulder should contact the wall

  4. Drive INTO the wall for 2 seconds

  5. Stand back up, return to your stance

  6. Repeat: 3 sets of 10 each side

What to check (film yourself from the side):

  • Is your back straight at the contact point?

  • Are your hips BELOW your shoulders?

  • Is your back knee on the mat at roughly 90 degrees?

If you fail any of these checks, slow down and fix the position before adding speed.

Why This Matters

The level change is the single biggest differentiator between wrestlers who score on their feet and those who can't. Fix this one mechanic and every takedown in your arsenal gets better — singles, doubles, high-crotches, all of it.

The complete system — snatch singles, clean doubles, high-crotch attacks, and chain wrestling — is inside the Takedown Mastery course. 5 chapters, 17 lessons, drills for every technique.
