The top 3 mistakes vendors make when taking contactless payments

Pop-up vendors and mobile shop owners lose sales at the tap, not at the till. Here are the three mistakes I see most often, and how to fix them.

1. Waiting until the customer is already holding cash

Set contactless as the default before the first person lines up. Open the reader, confirm the network is live, and keep a printed “Tap to pay” sign at eye level. If tap is an afterthought, people default to cash and walk when you cannot make change.

2. Charging before the amount is locked

Confirm the ticket total, tax, and any add-ons on one screen, then present the reader. A tap that fires on the wrong amount means refunds, awkward conversations, and a line that stops. One extra second of confirmation is cheaper than a chargeback.

3. Ignoring a failed tap instead of having a backup path

Have a second reader, a phone as a fallback, or a clear “try again / card insert” script. Tell the customer what to do in one sentence. Dead air after a decline kills the sale more often than the decline itself.
