The IELTS Reading Mistake That's Costing You 1-2 Full Bands

Most students preparing for IELTS Reading make the same fatal error: they read the passage first, then look at the questions.

That's backwards. Here's why, and what to do instead.

Why "read first" fails

IELTS Reading gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions across 3 passages — that's 20 minutes per passage, including reading time. If you read a 900-word academic passage start to finish before even looking at what's being asked, you've already burned 4-5 minutes on details you may never need.

What Band 7+ scorers actually do

1. Read the questions first, not the passage.

Skim the question stems for 60-90 seconds. Identify keywords, especially proper nouns, numbers, and dates — these are your anchors back into the text.

2. Scan for keyword locations, don't read linearly.

Once you know what you're hunting for, scan the passage the way you'd scan a webpage for a phone number — your eyes should move fast, not carefully.

3. Match paraphrases, not exact words.

IELTS almost never repeats the exact wording from the passage in the question. If the question says "considerably," the passage might say "a substantial increase." Train yourself to spot synonyms and paraphrased ideas, not literal string matches.

4. Handle True/False/Not Given like a lawyer, not a reader.

• True = the passage explicitly confirms it

• False = the passage explicitly contradicts it

• Not Given = the passage simply doesn't address it — this is NOT the same as "probably true" or "seems false"

Most students lose points here because they infer instead of verify. Only mark True/False if you can point to the exact sentence proving it.
