5 Bathroom Design Mistakes That Make Your Remodel Look Cheap
I've seen hundreds of bathroom remodels. The difference between one that looks like a $50K custom build and one that screams "I watched one YouTube video" usually comes down to 5 mistakes:
1. Wrong tile scale. Large format tile in a small bathroom makes the space feel bigger. Small mosaic everywhere? Looks busy and dated. Save mosaic for niches and accents only.
2. Ignoring the lighting plan. One overhead light is not a plan. You need three layers: task lighting at the vanity, ambient from recessed cans, and accent (like a backlit mirror or LED strip under a floating vanity).
3. Cheap fixtures, expensive tile. Flip that priority. A $300 matte black rain shower head transforms the whole vibe. Nobody notices $8/sqft tile vs $12/sqft tile — but they notice a plastic chrome faucet immediately.
4. No storage plan. That floating shelf looks great on Pinterest until you need to store 47 bottles of product. Built-in niches, medicine cabinets, and vanity drawers > open shelving every time.
5. Skipping the layout. Moving the toilet 6 inches can cost $3,000 in plumbing. Know your rough-in dimensions before you fall in love with a floor plan that doesn't work.
