The #1 bookkeeping mistake freelancers make (and how to fix it)
If you're a freelancer or solopreneur, here's the mistake that causes more tax-season panic and cash-flow confusion than anything else:
Mixing personal and business money.
One bank account for everything. Business expenses on a personal card. Client payments landing in the same place you pay rent from. It feels simpler in the moment — but it makes it nearly impossible to know if you're actually profitable, and it turns tax season into a nightmare of digging through months of transactions trying to remember "wait, was that a business expense?"
The fix is simple, not easy:
Open a separate business bank account (even if you're not an LLC yet — most banks allow a "doing business as" account)
Run every single business dollar through it — income in, expenses out
Pay yourself a fixed "owner's draw" transfer from business → personal on a set schedule
Reconcile that account monthly — it takes 30 minutes if you stay on top of it
That's it. That one habit alone will save you hours of cleanup and a lot of guessing when it's time to file.
If you want the full step-by-step system — chart of accounts setup, a 30-minute monthly close routine, and a tax-season prep checklist — I put it all together in The Bookkeeping Blueprint 📚
