The #1 mistake freelancers make with their personal brand

Most freelancers try to appeal to everyone. They keep their positioning vague because they're afraid of narrowing down.

"I'm a designer." "I do marketing." "I help businesses grow."

Cool — so does everyone else on the internet.

The freelancers who actually get inbound leads do the opposite. They get uncomfortably specific:

  • "I design landing pages for B2B SaaS companies launching on Product Hunt"

  • "I write email sequences for DTC brands doing $1-5M/year"

  • "I edit short-form content for finance creators on YouTube"

When you narrow your positioning, three things happen:

1. You become findable. People search for specialists, not generalists.

2. You become referable. Your friends can actually describe what you do.

3. You can charge more. Specialists command premium rates because they solve specific problems better.

The fear of niching down is the fear of missing out on clients. The reality is the opposite — you miss out on clients by NOT doing it.

I put together a full framework for this inside The Brand Playbook. It walks you through positioning, content strategy, and building authority in your space — step by step.
