I've helped hundreds of people buy cars without getting ripped off. Here are 5 things I wish everyone knew before walking onto a lot:
1. The sticker price is a suggestion, not a fact.
Every car on the lot has markup. The real number? Check what others paid for the same model on sites like TrueCar or KBB. Walk in with data.
2. "Monthly payment" is a trap.
Dealers love asking "What monthly payment works for you?" because it lets them stretch the loan term and hide a higher total cost. Always negotiate on the out-the-door price first.
3. Pre-approval is your best weapon.
Get a rate from your bank or credit union BEFORE you go in. Even if the dealer beats it, you set the floor. Most people skip this and pay 2-3% more than they should.
4. Timing matters more than you think.
End of month, end of quarter, and end of year are when dealers are most desperate to hit quotas. That's when you have leverage.
5. The F&I office is where they make their real money.
Extended warranties, paint protection, VIN etching — most of it is overpriced. Know what you want before you sit down, and don't be afraid to say no.
