Everyone talks about the secondary market like it's the only way to get rare spirits.
It's not. And chasing it blind is how you overpay.
The collectors who consistently land allocated bottles — Van Winkle, Blanton's Straight From The Barrel, Karuizawa — they're not refreshing secondary sites. They're doing three things most people skip:
1. They know their retailers better than the retailers know themselves.
Allocated spirits don't go to whoever calls. They go to accounts. Loyalty, volume, relationship. If you've never bought from a shop outside of "is the bottle on the shelf," you're not on anyone's allocation list.
2. They track distillery calendars, not drop announcements.
By the time a drop announcement hits social media, the bottles are already spoken for. The signal is watching production cycles, aging statements, and annual release patterns — not Instagram.
3. They have a clear buy/hold/pass framework.
FOMO is expensive. A 2024 Springbank 12 is not the same buying decision as a 1990s Springbank 12. Confusing them is how collections become money pits instead of assets.
