The 3-second rule that makes clips go viral

Most clips die in the first 3 seconds. Here's what separates a scroll-past from a watch-through:

Hook immediately. The first frame needs to be the most interesting moment — not the buildup. Pull the punchline, the reaction, or the hot take to the front.

Cut the dead air. Long-form has breathing room. Short-form doesn't. Every pause, every "um," every slow transition is a viewer lost. Ruthlessly trim.

Match the energy to the platform. A YouTube Shorts clip hits different from a TikTok clip. Same content, different pacing. TikTok rewards chaos. Shorts rewards clarity.

Here's my process:

  1. Watch the full video at 2x speed

  2. Timestamp every moment that made me react (laugh, lean in, pause)

  3. Build 3-5 clips around those moments

  4. Hook-first edit on each one

  5. Add captions (non-negotiable in 2026)

Most creators leave 10+ viral clips sitting in every hour of footage they publish. They just don't know how to find them yet.

That's literally what I teach inside The Clip Academy.
