Why 90% of cold DMs get ignored (and the 3 rules that fix it)

I've sent thousands of cold DMs as a freelancer. Most of them sucked.

Here's what I learned after tracking reply rates obsessively:

The problem isn't your offer. It's your message.

Most cold DMs fail because they sound like cold DMs. "Hi [Name], I came across your profile and I think there's a great opportunity..." Nobody reads past line two.

Rule 1: Personalize the first line. Always.

A real observation beats any clever opener. Reference their actual post, their slow-loading product page, the thing that genuinely caught your eye. That's the difference between a template and a real conversation.

Rule 2: One ask per message. Only one.

Don't pitch AND request a call AND drop a portfolio link. Every extra ask halves your reply rate. One message, one action.

Rule 3: Send it and move on.

Don't edit it twelve times. Don't reread it after you hit send. Sent is better than perfect. 10 personalized DMs beats 100 blasted ones.

I put together 30 templates that follow these rules — short, human-sounding messages for LinkedIn, Instagram, and X. Free value DMs, direct pitches, follow-ups, and re-engagement messages.

If you're a freelancer who hates writing cold outreach from scratch, this might save you hours every week.
