The 3 mindset shifts that got me back in the gym after 6 months off

I tore my meniscus playing basketball last year. Surgery went fine. Physical therapy was boring but manageable.

The hardest part? Getting out of bed and actually wanting to move again.

After months of doing nothing, I felt like a completely different person. No routine, no energy, no discipline. I'd scroll through old training videos and feel worse.

Here's what actually helped me rebuild:

1. I stopped comparing to my old self.

Your baseline reset. Accept it. Comparing your Day 1 to your Day 300 is how you quit before you start. I started measuring progress in streaks — 3 days in a row, 7 days, 14 days. That's it.

2. I built the smallest possible routine first.

Not a 90-minute gym session. Not a 5am cold plunge. I committed to 15 minutes of movement and 5 minutes of journaling. Every single day. The habit mattered more than the output.

3. I surrounded myself with people in the same fight.

Not fitness influencers. Not motivational podcasts. Real people who were also rebuilding after setbacks — injuries, burnout, life hitting them sideways. That accountability changed everything.

If you're in that stuck phase right now — where you know you should be doing something but can't find the energy — just know it's temporary. But it won't fix itself.

You need a system and a community. That's exactly what I built with The Comeback Code.
