The 3 mistakes killing most barbers' fades

After years behind the chair, I see the same three mistakes over and over — even from experienced barbers.

1. Starting too high with the open lever.

Most barbers open the lever way too early. Your guideline should be set with the lever closed first. The open lever is for blending, not for establishing length. If you're opening at the temple, you've already lost control of the graduation.

2. Not respecting the head shape.

Every skull is different. Stop cutting on autopilot. Feel the parietal ridge. That's where your fade line should naturally transition — not wherever you've decided looks "standard." The best cuts follow the anatomy.

3. Rushing the detail work.

The last 5 minutes of a cut are where average becomes premium. Cleaning the hairline, texturising the top, checking symmetry from every angle. Most barbers mentally check out after the fade is blended. Your client's camera roll doesn't lie — those details are what get you referrals.

These aren't advanced techniques. They're fundamentals that separate a £15 cut from a £40 one.
