5 documents every tradesperson needs before going independent
I've watched skilled workers leave their W-2 to go solo — and most lose money in the first 6 months. Not because they're bad at their craft. Because they don't have the business side locked down.
1. A real estimate template — Not a text message. A proper estimate with line items, materials, labor, and markup. Customers trust professionals who look professional.
2. A scope-of-work contract — Saves you when the client says "I thought that was included." Spell out exactly what you're doing, what you're NOT doing, timeline, and payment terms.
3. A change order form — Every job has scope creep. When the client wants extras mid-project, this is how you get paid without the awkward conversation.
4. A daily job log — Track hours, materials, weather, issues. Protects you legally and helps you bid future jobs accurately.
5. An invoice with payment terms — Net 30, 50% upfront, whatever fits your trade. Get it in writing. Make it look clean.
Most guys skip this stuff and wonder why they're chasing payments and eating costs. Don't be that guy.
I put together a complete toolkit with all of these plus safety checklists, calculators, and cert prep — one-time purchase, use it forever.
