The one winter check most families skip
Most people think winter safety for older relatives is about the weather outside. It's not. It's about the bathroom tile at 7am.
Here's what I've learned working with families across the UK and Canada:
Cold rooms change behaviour before they change symptoms. Your relative isn't going to say "my bathroom is too cold." They're going to start gripping the sink to turn around. They're going to hesitate at the hallway. They're going to skip their morning routine.
The fix takes five minutes. Walk the home at the coldest hour — not midday. Stand still in the bedroom, bathroom, and the route between them. Count to thirty. Where does your body tighten? That's the room that needs attention first.
Three things to check in order:
Warmth — find the coldest room and reduce time spent there
Footing — clear the night route from bed to bathroom, add a lamp, dry the slippers
Medicines — anchor doses to fixed events (first tea, lunch, evening news), not memory
Two small changes in one day — appetite down, steadiness off, a repeated question — deserve a pause and a check. Don't wait for the fall.
I built a full room-by-room winter care plan with checklists, medication anchors, and a family response template. It's $19 and available now.
