The 3 things that actually get freelance clients (not what you think)

I've been freelancing in design and writing for years. Here's what I've learned about getting clients — none of it involves cold DMs or "posting every day."

1. One great case study beats 50 portfolio pieces.

Most freelancers show everything they've ever made. Clients don't care. They want to see ONE project where you solved a real problem. Write up the before/after, the thinking behind your decisions, and the result. That's what converts.

2. The best clients come from other clients.

Every project you finish, ask: "Who else do you know that might need this?" Not pushy — just a question. Referrals close faster and pay more because trust is already built.

3. Your process IS your pitch.

Stop selling "design" or "copywriting." Sell your process. "Here's how I take a brand from confused to clear in 2 weeks." That's infinitely more compelling than a list of software you know.

If you're a freelance designer or writer trying to build a real client pipeline, I break stuff like this down every week inside The Creative Brief.
