The 5-Second Rule That Makes Any Design Feel Premium
Most designs fail for the same reason: they try to say everything at once.
Here's a framework I use with every project:
The 5-Second Rule — If someone can't understand the hierarchy of your design in 5 seconds, it's too complex. Not the content. The hierarchy.
Here's how to fix it:
One dominant element. Every layout needs a clear focal point. If everything is bold, nothing is bold.
Two levels of contrast. Primary info gets high contrast. Secondary info gets low. That's it. Not three levels. Two.
White space is a decision, not a leftover. The space you don't fill communicates as much as the space you do.
I've watched creative directors at top agencies apply this exact framework to campaigns worth millions. It works at every scale — from a social post to a full brand system.
I break down design thinking like this every week inside The Creative Brief. If you're a creative director or on a marketing team that needs sharper visual instincts, this is for you.
