3 Deck Building Mistakes That Are Costing You Games (Across MTG, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh)

Doesn't matter which TCG you play — most players make the same core mistakes when building decks. Here's what they are and how to fix them:

1. Chasing the best cards instead of the best strategy

The best deck isn't the one with the most powerful cards. It's the one with the most consistent strategy. A $50 deck built around a clear win condition will beat a $500 pile of individually powerful cards almost every time. Know what your deck is trying to do on Turn 3 — and build backwards from there.

2. Ignoring the ratio problem

In Pokémon: running 1-of techs you'll never see. In MTG: not enough land (or too much). In Yu-Gi-Oh: bricks from mismatched hand combinations. Deck ratios aren't just math — they're the difference between a deck that executes and one that floods or folds. Most players underestimate how often consistency wins.

3. Building for the ideal hand, not the average hand

Everyone playtests the perfect scenario. Nobody tests what happens when you draw badly. A strong deck should be functional across your worst 3 draws, not just your best one. If your deck only works when you open 2+ specific cards, it's not ready for competition.

These three fixes alone will improve your win rate across any TCG.
