5 editing mistakes that make your content look amateur (and how to fix them)
Most creators focus on cameras, lighting, and thumbnails — but their edits are what's actually killing their content.
Here are the 5 most common mistakes I see:
1. Jump cuts with no purpose
Every cut should either advance the story or maintain energy. If you're cutting just to remove pauses, try J-cuts or L-cuts instead — they feel way more natural.
2. Music that fights your voice
Your background track shouldn't compete with your dialogue. Duck the music 6-8dB under your voice, and use tracks that match the energy of the section, not the whole video.
3. Ignoring color consistency
If your skin tone shifts between clips, your audience notices — even if they can't explain why. Match your white balance first, then apply a base correction to every clip before you start grading.
4. Transitions for the sake of transitions
That zoom transition looks sick… the first time. After the 15th one in a 60-second video, it's exhausting. Let your cuts breathe. A hard cut at the right moment hits harder than any preset.
5. Exporting at the wrong settings
You spent hours editing and then export at 720p with a terrible bitrate. Always match your export to your platform — 1080p minimum, high bitrate, correct aspect ratio.
If any of these hit home, that's exactly what we break down step-by-step inside The Edit Room. Three courses from beginner to pro — built for creators who want their content to actually stand out.
