Why I stopped trusting productivity apps and started making journals instead

For two years I tried every app that promised to fix my follow-through — task managers, habit trackers, AI planners. I finished more onboarding flows than actual projects.

What actually worked was dumb and analog: a thick notebook where I wrote down exactly 3 things every morning, in pen, before I touched my phone. No sync, no notifications, no way to quietly archive a task I didn't want to look at.

That constraint — permanence, no undo button — is why it worked. Digital tools let you reorganize your intentions infinitely. Paper makes you commit.

I turned that habit into The Execution Journal, a premium-weight daily journal built around one page per day: 3 priorities, a decision log, and an end-of-day review.

If you're stuck in planning-app purgatory, try going analog for a week. It's uncomfortable in a good way.
