Every coach tracks points and rebounds. Very few track the numbers that actually predict wins.
After breaking down hundreds of high school and AAU games, these are the three metrics that separate programs that win consistently from programs that just get hot sometimes:
1. Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%)
Regular FG% treats all shots the same. A team shooting 40% from three is generating more points per shot than a team shooting 45% from two. eFG% accounts for this. If your eFG% is below 48%, you have a shot selection problem — not a talent problem.
2. Turnover Rate (per possession, not per game)
Raw turnover totals are useless without context. A team that plays at 75 possessions/game will naturally have more turnovers than one playing at 55. What matters is turnovers per 100 possessions. Elite HS programs stay under 18%. If you're above 22%, your offense is bleeding points before you even get a shot up.
3. Offensive Rebound %
This one's underrated. Getting 30%+ of your own misses back is like adding 8-10 extra possessions per game. That's the equivalent of an extra quarter of offense. And unlike three-point shooting, offensive rebounding is coachable through effort and positioning — it's pure hustle and scheme.
Most coaches already have the data to track these. The problem is nobody's organizing it into a system that tells you what to fix and how.
That's what I'm building here. If you coach at the HS or AAU level and want a data edge, this is for you.
