5 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Airstream Trip
I pulled into my first campground with a 27-foot Airstream Globetrotter and zero confidence. Here's what I learned the hard way so you don't have to.
1. Your city water hose will freeze before anything else.
Everyone worries about their tanks. But the $12 hose connecting you to the spigot is the weakest link. Disconnect it overnight in cold weather and switch to your onboard tank. Problem solved, $0 spent.
2. Backing in is a relationship test.
Forget hand signals. Buy a pair of walkie-talkies. My wife and I use Midland T71s. Game changer. Put your hands at 4 and 8 on the wheel. Left = trailer goes left. Small movements only.
3. Level before you unhitch.
I see people unhitch first and then scramble to level. Don't. Chock your wheels, level side-to-side with blocks, THEN unhitch. A small aluminum level on your bathroom counter is all you need.
4. Your water heater will beep at 2 AM if you forget the furnace.
There's a freeze-prevention cycle that kicks in when temps drop. If your propane isn't activated, it throws an E1 error code and beeps like a smoke detector. Ask me how I know.
5. The "campground judge" effect is all in your head.
Every new Airstream owner feels like the whole campground is watching them back in. Spoiler: they are. But they're also rooting for you. Everyone started somewhere.
I started the GenX Glamping Guy to help new Airstream owners skip the rookie mistakes and actually enjoy the adventure. If any of this resonates, come hang out.
