5 things I wish someone told me before I picked up a guitar
I've been playing guitar for years, and I've taught dozens of people who started from absolute zero. Here's what actually matters when you're starting out:
1. Your first guitar doesn't matter as much as you think.
A $150 acoustic will teach you the same chords as a $1,500 Martin. Don't let gear anxiety stop you from starting.
2. Learn 4 chords and you can play 100+ songs.
G, C, D, Em. That's it. Most pop, rock, and country songs are built on these. Start there.
3. Your fingers WILL hurt. It goes away.
Calluses build in about 2-3 weeks of regular practice. Push through the first week and it gets dramatically easier.
4. 15 minutes a day beats 2 hours on Sunday.
Consistency > marathon sessions. Your muscle memory builds through daily repetition, not cramming.
5. Play songs you actually like.
Theory is important eventually, but nothing keeps you motivated like playing a song you love — even if it's just the intro riff.
I built The Guitar Lab for people who've always wanted to play but never knew where to start. If that's you, come hang.
