The #1 mistake new puppy owners make with housetraining
I've helped hundreds of first-time puppy owners housetrain their dogs, and they almost all make the same mistake in the first week:
They give their puppy too much freedom too soon.
Your 10-week-old Lab doesn't need access to 1,500 square feet of house. They need a crate, a designated potty spot, and a schedule.
Here's what actually works:
The 3-Zone Method:
Zone 1: The crate. This is home base. Dogs don't want to soil where they sleep. Use this instinct.
Zone 2: The supervised area. A small, gated section where you can watch them like a hawk. Leash them to you if needed.
Zone 3: The potty spot. Same spot, every time. Praise like crazy when they go.
The schedule that works:
Out immediately after waking up
Out 15 minutes after eating
Out every 60-90 minutes during the day
Out right before bed
Most puppies will be reliably housetrained in 1-2 weeks with this approach. The ones that take months? Their owners skipped the boring consistency part.
If you're in the trenches right now with a new puppy — this is the exact system I teach inside HouseTrained. It's $47 and it'll save you weeks of frustration.
