The 3 Most Common Mistakes That Ruin Homemade Herbal Tinctures (And How to Fix Them)
I've watched hundreds of people try to make tinctures at home. Most of them fail for the same three reasons — and none of them have anything to do with not having the right equipment.
Mistake #1: Using the wrong alcohol proof.
Most recipes just say "vodka." But vodka is 40% ABV, and that's only strong enough to extract water-soluble compounds. If you're working with resins, alkaloids, or tough root material, you need 60-95% ABV. The herb determines the solvent, not the other way around.
Fix: Match your ABV to the plant constituents you're trying to extract. Water-soluble? 40-50% works. Resins and aromatics? You need 70%+. There are charts for this — it's not guesswork.
Mistake #2: Eyeballing the herb-to-alcohol ratio.
"Fill the jar halfway with herbs and cover with alcohol" is the folk method. It works... sometimes. The problem is inconsistency. Your second batch won't match your first, and you can't troubleshoot what you can't measure.
Fix: Use weight-to-volume ratios. A kitchen scale and a measuring cup are all you need. 1:5 (dried herb) or 1:2 (fresh herb) by weight-to-volume gives you a repeatable, potent tincture every time.
Mistake #3: Not pressing the marc.
After maceration, most people just strain through cheesecloth and toss the herbs. But up to 30% of your extract is still trapped in the plant material.
Fix: Press it. A potato ricer, garlic press, or even just squeezing the cheesecloth firmly will recover significantly more of your preparation. Then filter through a coffee filter for clarity.

These three fixes — right ABV, measured ratios, and pressing the marc — are the difference between a weak, inconsistent tincture and one that actually works.
I wrote The Kitchen Apothecary specifically to solve these problems. Every method in the book uses clear ratios, safe practices, and only the tools already in your kitchen drawers. No specialty gear. No guesswork.
If you've been frustrated with DIY herbalism that doesn't deliver consistent results, this is the system that fixes it.
