The $0 → $100K playbook: 5 channels that actually work for early-stage startups

Most startup founders burn their first $10K on ads before they've even validated their messaging. Here's the order I'd actually spend my marketing budget if I were starting from zero today:

1. Cold DMs on X/LinkedIn (Cost: $0)

Not spam. Genuine conversations with your ICP. 30 personalized DMs/day → 3-5 warm leads/week. Most founders skip this because it doesn't feel "scalable." That's exactly why it works.

2. SEO content targeting bottom-of-funnel keywords (Cost: $0-500)

Don't write "What is [category]" posts. Write "Best [your category] for [specific use case]" and "[Competitor] alternatives." These people are ready to buy.

3. Community-led growth (Cost: $0)

Find the 5 communities where your customers already hang out. Don't pitch — answer questions, share insights, become the person people tag.

4. Strategic partnerships (Cost: $0)

Find companies that sell to your same customer but aren't competitors. Co-host a webinar, swap newsletter features, do a bundle deal. You're borrowing their trust.

5. Paid ads — but only after you've nailed messaging from 1-4 (Cost: $500+)

If you can't convert with free channels, ads won't save you. Once you know what resonates, THEN pour fuel on it.

The pattern: earn trust first, spend money second.

I break down one of these channels every week inside The Marketing Edge. Each issue is a full playbook you can implement in a day.
