The #1 thing couples fight about (and how to fix it before the wedding)

It's not what you think.

Most people guess infidelity. Or in-laws. But the data is clear: money is the leading cause of conflict in relationships.

And here's the thing — it's not about how much you have. It's about how you talk about it. Couples who have open, structured conversations about money before marriage are significantly less likely to face serious conflict in the first few years.

Here's a simple framework I use with every couple I coach:

The 3-Account System

  • Yours

  • Mine

  • Ours

Each person keeps their own account for personal spending (no judgment, no permission needed). Then you have a shared account for bills, savings, and joint goals.

But the real magic isn't the accounts — it's the weekly money meeting. 15 minutes. Every Sunday. You go through:

  1. What did we spend this week?

  2. Are we on track for our goals?

  3. Any big purchases coming up?

That's it. No lectures. No blame. Just a check-in.

Couples who do this consistently tell me the same thing: "We don't fight about money anymore."

If you're engaged or in a serious relationship, try this for 4 weeks. You'll feel the difference.

I teach this and a lot more inside The Marriage Prep — communication, conflict resolution, intimacy, all of it. If you're serious about building a marriage that lasts, come check it out.
