The 3 mistakes every beginner makes in their first year of lifting
I spent 2 years spinning my wheels before I figured out what actually builds muscle. Here's what I wish someone told me on day one.
Mistake #1: Program hopping
You don't need the "perfect" program. You need ANY decent program done consistently for 12+ weeks. The guy following a basic push/pull/legs split for 6 months will outlift the guy who switches programs every 3 weeks — every single time.
Mistake #2: Eating like a bird and wondering why nothing changes
If you weigh 150 lbs and you're eating 1,800 calories "because you don't want to get fat," you're not building anything. You need a caloric surplus. Period. Start with bodyweight x 16-17 in calories and adjust from there. Track your food for at least the first 3 months.
Mistake #3: Chasing weight instead of tension
Nobody cares how much you bench if your chest doesn't grow. Control the eccentric, pause at the bottom, squeeze at the top. A slow, controlled 135 lb bench press will build more muscle than a bounced 225. Leave your ego at the door.
These three fixes alone would have saved me a full year of wasted effort. If you're just starting out and want to skip the trial-and-error phase, I built THE MUSCLE LAB for exactly that.
