The 5 biggest mistakes beginners make in the gym (and what to do instead)
I've coached dozens of beginners and I see the same mistakes every single time. Here's what's probably holding you back:
1. No programme, no progress.
Walking into the gym and doing whatever you feel like is the fastest way to waste your time. You need progressive overload — that means a structured plan that gradually increases weight, reps, or volume over time. Without it, your body has no reason to adapt.
2. Skipping compound lifts.
If your entire workout is bicep curls and lat raises, you're building a house with no foundation. Squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, rows — these are the movements that build the most muscle in the least time.
3. Ego lifting.
Nobody cares how much weight is on the bar if your form is terrible. Bad form = bad results + injuries. Learn the movement properly at a lighter weight first. The strength will come.
4. Not eating enough protein.
Training breaks your muscles down. Protein rebuilds them bigger. If you're not getting at least 1.6g per kg of bodyweight daily, you're leaving gains on the table. Track it for a week and you'll see what I mean.
5. Programme hopping.
Doing a plan for 2 weeks, seeing no results, then switching to another one. Muscle takes months to build. Pick a plan, commit to it for 8-12 weeks minimum, and actually track your progress.
If you want a structured plan built for beginners with step-by-step guidance, that's exactly what The Physique Lab is for. No fluff, just results.
