3 things I wish I knew before applying for business credit

Most people try to get business credit the wrong way. They form an LLC, immediately apply for a credit card, get denied, and give up.

Here's what actually works:

1. Your business needs to look real before you apply.

That means a dedicated phone number, a business address (even a virtual one), and a professional email. Lenders check this stuff. If your "business" is just a name on a piece of paper, you're getting denied.

2. Start with net-30 vendor accounts, not credit cards.

Companies like Uline, Grainger, and Quill will extend you net-30 terms and report to business credit bureaus. Stack 3-5 of these before you even think about a credit card. This is how you build a Dun & Bradstreet score from zero.

3. Your personal credit still matters (at first).

Until your business credit profile is strong enough to stand on its own, lenders will pull your personal score. If it's under 650, work on that in parallel. They're not separate worlds — they're connected.

The system isn't complicated. It's just specific. Most people fail because they skip steps or do things out of order.
