Your Week 1 Action Plan

By the end of this week, you will know exactly how to separate tax money from every payment you receive:

  1. Open Chapter 1 — The Three-Way Split Rule. This is the foundation. Every payment gets divided into three buckets: tax, operating, and owner pay.

  1. Apply the split to your very next client payment. Do not wait. Use the default percentages: 30% tax / 20% operating / 50% owner pay.

  1. Read Chapter 2 — The Traffic Light Check. Your weekly 60-second pulse. Green, yellow, or red.

  1. Open the Deadline Map in Chapter 3. Find your next quarterly tax deadline. Count back 7 days. That is your real deadline now.

  1. Set a calendar reminder for your first Traffic Light Check this Sunday.

Your Immediate Next Action

Open Chapter 1 right now. Read the Three-Way Split Rule. Then split your next client payment before the day is over.

One chapter. One split. You are already ahead.

The 30-Second Rule That Stops Freelance Tax Panic

Every freelancer has had this moment:

Quarter-end arrives. You check your bank account. You realize you have been spending your tax money for months. The scramble begins.

I built a system to make sure that never happens again. Here is the core rule — free, no strings attached:

---

The Three-Way Split (30 seconds per payment)

Every time a client payment hits your account, split it immediately:

Bucket

Default %

Purpose

Tax Set-Aside

30%

Moves to a separate savings account. Do not touch it.

Business Operating

20%

Covers tools, subscriptions, contractors, expenses.

Owner Pay

50%

This is your actual take-home.

Example: You receive $2,000 from a client.

  • $600 → tax savings account (transfer now)

  • $400 → business operating

  • $1,000 → your personal account

That is it. Takes 30 seconds. Do it the same day the payment arrives.

---

Why This Works

The reason freelancers panic at quarter-end is not because taxes are complicated. It is because the money was never separated.

When tax money sits in the same account as spending money, it gets spent. Every time. It is not a willpower problem — it is a system problem.

The fix is mechanical: split first, spend second.

---

The One Adjustment

30% is a starting point. Your actual percentage depends on your income bracket:

  • Under $50K/year → 25%

  • $50K–$100K → 30%

  • $100K–$200K → 30–35%

  • Over $200K → 35–40%

If you are in the US, remember self-employment tax adds ~15.3% on top of your income tax rate. The 30% default accounts for this at moderate income levels.
