The 1 question that turns a one-off client call into a retainer
Most freelancers lose recurring revenue in the last 5 minutes of a client call — not because their work is bad, but because they never ask the right closing question.
Here's the mistake: after delivering value on a call, most people say something like "Let me know if you need anything else!" That's an exit line. It tells the client the relationship is over.
Instead, ask this: "What does the next 90 days look like for [their goal]? I ask because most of what I just walked you through works best when it's revisited monthly instead of one-off."
This does three things:
It gets the client thinking in a timeline, not a single transaction.
It plants the idea that ongoing check-ins are how you get results (which is true — most skills/strategies decay without follow-up).
It gives you a natural bridge to say "I actually do this as a monthly retainer for a few clients — want me to send over what that looks like?"
The retainer pitch only works if you ask this question BEFORE you pitch the retainer. Pitching cold, out of nowhere, feels like an upsell. Pitching after this question feels like a logical next step the client already agreed to.
Try it on your next call and see what happens to your close rate.
