5 red flags that your setter career is about to stall (and how to fix each one)

If you've been setting for a few months and things feel... off — this post is for you. Most setters hit a wall between month 2-6. The money plateaus, motivation drops, and you start wondering if this is actually gonna work long-term.

Here are 5 red flags I see constantly — and what to do about each one.

---

🚩 Red Flag #1: You're only working for one client

One client = one point of failure. They cut you? You're back to zero overnight.

The fix: You should always be prospecting, even when things are good. Aim for 2-3 clients minimum. Diversify across niches if you can — if the coaching market dips, your SaaS client keeps you afloat.

---

🚩 Red Flag #2: Your booking rate is dropping

You started at 70-80% and now you're hovering around 50%. You haven't changed anything. So what happened?

The fix: Your scripts went stale. Prospects hear the same patterns over and over. If you're using the same word-for-word framework you started with, it's time to evolve. Record your calls, listen back, and identify where prospects start pulling away. That's where your script needs work.

---

🚩 Red Flag #3: You're getting paid per appointment, not per close

Per-appointment pay feels safe because it's predictable. But it caps your upside HARD. If your closer converts 30% of what you send them and deals are worth $3K+, you're leaving thousands on the table every month.

The fix: Negotiate a hybrid comp structure — small base + percentage of closed revenue. Even 5-10% of closed deals can 2-3x your income. But you need LEVERAGE to negotiate this, which means your appointments need to be high-quality and your show rates need to be elite.

---

🚩 Red Flag #4: You have no system — just vibes

You're not tracking your calls. You don't know your exact booking rate, show rate, or close rate. You don't have documented scripts or follow-up sequences. You're just... winging it every day.

The fix: Build your setter operating system. Track every call in a spreadsheet. Document your best-performing scripts. Create templated follow-up sequences. The setters who make $5K-$10K/mo treat this like a BUSINESS, not a gig.

---

🚩 Red Flag #5: You're not investing in yourself

You learned the basics, landed a gig, and stopped growing. Meanwhile, the market is getting more competitive every month. New setters are coming in with better training, better scripts, and more hunger.

The fix: Dedicate time and money to leveling up. Study sales psychology. Learn objection handling frameworks. Practice your tonality. The best setters never stop sharpening the blade.

---

Real talk

If you checked 2+ of these boxes, your setter career isn't dead — but it IS on a timer. The difference between setters who make $3K/mo forever and setters who scale to $8-10K/mo is having a COMPLETE system.

That's exactly why I built The Setter Blueprint. It's the full A-to-Z system — finding clients, scripting, discovery calls, negotiating comp, scaling to multiple clients, and building a real setter business (not just a side gig).

If you're serious about turning appointment setting into a real career, this is the playbook.

Stop freelancing your future. Build the system. 🏗️

The discovery call framework that books 80% of prospects

I'm about to give you the exact discovery call framework I use that converts at 80%+. Most setters wing their discovery calls and it shows — they talk too much, qualify too little, and hand off garbage leads to closers.

Here's the framework. Save this.

The P.A.I.N. Framework

Every high-converting discovery call follows four phases:

P — Position the call

First 60 seconds. Set the frame immediately.

"Hey [name], appreciate you jumping on. Here's how this works — I'm gonna ask you a few questions to see if we can actually help you. If it's a fit, I'll get you connected with someone on our team. If not, no worries at all. Sound good?"

Why this works: You're not selling. You're qualifying. This instantly lowers their guard.

A — Agitate the problem

Next 5-7 minutes. This is where most setters fumble. You need to dig DEEP.

Don't ask: "So what's your biggest challenge?"

Ask: "Walk me through what a typical day looks like when you're trying to [get clients / grow revenue / scale]."

Then follow up with:

  • "How long has that been going on?"

  • "What have you already tried?"

  • "What happens if nothing changes in the next 6 months?"

The goal: Get them to verbalize their own pain. When THEY say it out loud, it becomes real. You're not convincing them of anything — you're helping them convince themselves.

I — Identify the gap

2-3 minutes. Bridge their problem to the solution.

"So it sounds like you're doing [X] but you want to be at [Y]. The gap is [specific thing]. Does that sound right?"

Make them agree. Get a verbal "yes." This creates psychological commitment.

N — Navigate to the next step

Final 2 minutes. This is NOT a close. This is a handoff.

"Based on what you've told me, I think [closer's name / the team] can definitely help you with this. They'll walk you through exactly how it works. I'm going to get you scheduled — does [day] at [time] work?"

No hesitation. No "would you like to..." Just book it.

---

Common mistakes that kill your booking rate

❌ Talking more than 30% of the call. If you're talking more than the prospect, you're doing it wrong. Your job is to ASK and LISTEN.

❌ Skipping the pain agitation. If they don't feel the pain on the call, they won't show up to the close. Every no-show is a failed discovery call.

❌ Being too agreeable. "Yeah totally, I get that" on repeat makes you sound like a bot. Challenge them gently: "Why haven't you fixed this yet?"

❌ Not confirming the booking. Always send a calendar invite AND a confirmation text within 5 minutes of hanging up. Show rate jumps 25-30% with this alone.

---

Want the full playbook?

This framework is the foundation, but there's a LOT more to it — handling objections on discovery calls, the exact questions for 12 different niches, how to read buying signals, and the follow-up sequences that rescue no-shows.

I broke it all down in The Discovery Playbook.

Your discovery calls should be the easiest part of your day. Stop guessing and start using a system that works. 📞

How I'd land my first $3K/mo setter gig in 30 days (step-by-step)

Most people overcomplicate this. If I was starting from zero with no experience, no connections, and no portfolio — here's exactly what I'd do to land a $3K/mo appointment setting gig in 30 days.

Week 1: Get your foundation right

Days 1-3: Pick your niche.

Stop trying to set for everyone. Pick ONE industry — coaching, SaaS, real estate, whatever. The more specific, the easier it is to land clients because you can speak their language.

Days 4-7: Build your "setter resume."

You don't need experience. You need proof you understand sales. Record 2-3 mock cold calls. Write a one-page doc showing you understand the niche's pain points. That's your portfolio now.

Week 2: Start outreach (the right way)

Days 8-10: Build your hit list.

Find 50 businesses in your niche that are running ads but probably don't have a dedicated setter. Look for coaches and course creators doing $10K-$50K/mo — they need help but can't afford a full sales team.

Days 11-14: Send 20 DMs per day.

Not "hey I'm looking for a setter role" energy. Lead with VALUE:

"Hey [name], I noticed you're running FB ads for your coaching program. I broke down your funnel and have 3 ideas on how a dedicated setter could increase your show rate by 20-30%. Mind if I send them over?"

That's it. No pitch. Just value first.

Week 3: Close the deal

Days 15-18: Do free trial sets.

When someone bites, offer to set for them for 3-5 days free. This removes all risk for them and gives you REAL experience. Track everything — calls made, appointments booked, show rates.

Days 19-21: Present your results and negotiate.

Show them the numbers. "In 5 days I booked X appointments with a Y% show rate. Here's what I can do in a full month." Ask for $3K/mo base or $2K + commission.

Week 4: Lock it in and level up

Days 22-28: Systematize your process.

Document your scripts, your follow-up sequences, your lead qualification criteria. This is what separates a $3K setter from a $1K setter.

Days 29-30: Start looking for client #2.

One client = a job. Two clients = a business. Use the same playbook to land your second gig.

The part most people skip

Finding the gig is honestly the hardest part. Most setters are great on the phone but trash at finding opportunities. I put together the Setter Job Finder — it's a full system for finding, qualifying, and landing high-paying setter gigs fast.

It covers the exact outreach templates, where to find clients who are actively hiring, and how to position yourself so you're not competing with 500 other applicants.

The gigs are out there. You just need a system to find them. 🎯

"I don't know what to say to prospects" — here, steal these scripts

This is the #1 thing that stops people from starting in appointment setting.

You know the money is there. You've seen the posts. $5K, $8K, $10K months — all from setting appointments over DMs and calls.

But then you sit down to actually message someone and your brain goes:

"...what do I even say?"

So you overthink it. Draft something. Delete it. Draft again. Close the app. Tell yourself you'll start tomorrow.

Tomorrow turns into next week. Next week turns into never.

I built The Setter Script Pack to kill that problem permanently.

What's inside:

→ Cold DM openers that actually get replies (not "Hey, are you interested in...")

→ Follow-up sequences — because 80% of deals happen after the first message

→ Objection handlers — "I'm not interested," "I don't have time," "Send me more info" — all covered

→ Booking confirmations that reduce no-shows

→ "Not interested" saves — scripts that revive dead conversations

15+ scripts total. Copy, paste, send, book.

$7.99. Less than your morning coffee order.

You could literally buy this, open it, and send your first outreach message in the next 10 minutes.

Stop overthinking. Start sending.

FREE GUIDE: How to turn your 'boring' work experience into a $5K+/mo appointment setting career

You don't need sales experience to get hired as an appointment setter. In fact, most CEOs and recruiters are actively looking for people with backgrounds you'd never expect.

Here's how to reframe what you already have.

The skills they're actually hiring for

Appointment setting isn't about being a smooth talker. It's about:

  • Following a process consistently (any job where you followed SOPs)

  • Communicating clearly over text/phone (customer service, admin, reception)

  • Managing a pipeline (scheduling, project coordination, even food service during a rush)

  • Showing up reliably (literally any W-2 job you held down)

If you've done ANY of these, you already have transferable skills. You just need to speak the right language.

How to reframe your experience (with examples)

Retail / Food Service →

"Managed high-volume customer interactions daily, handled objections in real-time, and consistently met targets under pressure."

Customer Service / Call Center →

"Conducted 50+ daily conversations with prospects, qualified leads based on specific criteria, and maintained detailed CRM records."

Admin / Office / Reception →

"Coordinated scheduling across multiple stakeholders, managed inbound inquiries, and maintained organized follow-up systems."

Freelancer / Gig Worker →

"Self-managed a client pipeline from outreach to delivery, maintained consistent communication cadence, and hit deadlines independently with zero supervision."

Teacher / Tutor →

"Broke down complex information into simple next steps, built rapport quickly with diverse audiences, and guided people toward specific outcomes through structured conversations."

Notice the pattern — you're not lying about anything. You're translating what you did into the language that sales hiring managers understand.

The skill that's quietly paying 20-somethings $5-10K/mo from their laptop

Most people don't even know appointment setting is a thing.

Here's the short version: businesses with high-ticket offers ($3K-$50K+) need someone to get prospects on the phone with their closer. That someone is the appointment setter.

You don't need a degree. You don't need sales experience. You don't need to be on camera. You need a phone, wifi, and a system.

What a typical day looks like:

  • 2-4 hours of work

  • Responding to leads via DM, text, or calls

  • Booking qualified prospects onto a sales call

  • Getting paid per booked appointment or on commission

Setters working with good offers are pulling $5K-$10K/mo part-time. Some are doing $15K+ full-time.

The skill is learnable in 2-4 weeks if you have the right framework. The hard part isn't the skill — it's knowing it exists in the first place.

If you're tired of trading hours for minimum wage and want a remote skill that actually pays, this is it.
